Tips on how to avoid work at home scams

How can I avoid being scammed?

There are a few things that you can do to help avoid being scammed by people that are listing work at home opportunities. One of the first things you should ask yourself is:

Does this sound too good to be true?

"Make $30,000 dollars in 30 days!"

Hey this is for me man. I could sure use to make that kind of money. Guess what? It may be possible to make this kind of money but the person making the money is the guy touting this program. Most of these get rich quick schemes require you to send the author money for your "training materials" or for more information. Don't do it!

In most cases the perpetrator absconds with your money and you don't receive any kind of material at all. If you do receive your "training materials" it begins to train you on how you can use the same method of scamming to make money. All you have to do is set up a way for people to pay you and then just post the following message:

"Make $31,000 in just 31 days! Just send $14.95 for your training materials."

Starting to see the trend here? Yes, you can probably scam some people into sending you the $14.95 but not all of the people. Do you really think that you can make that much money in such little time without spending a whole lot of time? Your best bet is to stay away from these type of scams.

Check up on the company offering the work at home opportunity.

If the company offering the work at home job is any good then there should be information on the company. Use one of your friendly neighborhood search engines to do a little research. You would be surprised at how much information you can find out about a company on the internet. There are numerous work at home forums and blogs out there that have plenty of people that have tried a lot of work at home jobs. These people offer their recommendations and thoughts freely.

Be cautious of what you are paying for.

Some legitimate work at home jobs do require a start up fee. My rule of thumb is if you honestly feel that you can get at least your money back then pay the money. If you get your money back and more then hey that's great. You've made a profit. Ask what kind of return on investment you will see if you sign up for a work at home job. If there is an enormous start up fee for say, a data entry job, then be very cautious. It takes a lot of data entry to recoup your startup fee. There should be no reason to pay a large startup fee for this type of job. However, if you find a work at home job that requires you to buy inventory you might have to pay quite a bit to start. If a large startup cost is required for this you better make sure that you can sell your inventory at a profit. You should also make sure that there is a market for the inventory. You may be able to make a large profit on selling each piece but there may be a small market of people who are willing to purchase your goods. You'll have to work that much harder to sell each item.

Know when to say when.

I can't count the number of times I have gotten myself into something and continued to do it even though it was losing money. Make sure that you know when you should get out of a bad situation. This holds true for anything whether it be your day job, a work at home job, business, or investment. Too many people plug away at something insisting that it will make money even though their expenses increase while their profits decrease. Make sure that you record your monthly progress. This will tell you whether you are making money in any work at home venture. If you don't keep records then you won't know if you are succeeding. Make a monthly list of your expenses and income from your work at home venture. If your monthly expenditures continue to increase and your income continues to decrease then GET OUT! Why continue to lose money? Look for another venture. It doesn't make sense to spend more time on the one that loses you money. However, if you find that your income is slowly increasing you may want to look for more ways to help this income grow. Knowing if you are losing money is one way to tell if your work at home job is legitimate.
